Golf Corner By Ric de Vera Obet Bolina who just recently won the 13th Knights Cup Golf tournament added another feather in his hat by winning the monthly competition of Fil-Oz Social golf club held on August 21 at Macquarie Links International Golf club. He scored an even par 36 compared to his stunning score of 49 points three weeks ago using his handicap of 23, both under the stableford scoring system.
Runner up was Bernie Balagtas with his score of 35 stableford points, using his AGU handicap of 11. It will be recalled that Bernie was also the champion of the 17th Susan’s Golf Cup held on July 2 coordinated by the Divotees Social Golf Club. In this tournament he outlasted the rest of 70 golfers using the System 36 scoring system.
In another development, Glenn Tahimic of Woodcroft, an old time member of Fil-Oz was presented with a Plaque of Appreciation for his untiring service to the Club ranging from over a decade of being the coordinator of all major Club’s tournaments namely Kalayaan Cup, Interclub Championships, Canberra-Sydney Challenge and recently the Fil Trans-Tasman golf tournament. The presentation was held during the Fil-Oz monthly comp and after the BBQ lunch coordinated by Bernie Balagtas, Treasurer.
“It is high time that we recognize the great efforts and service of our members in helping Fil-Oz become what it is today” said Ric de Vera, Fil-Oz President. “Glenn was there when the going was really rough and he absorbed all the shocks until all is well and the sailing become normal again” Ric de Vera finally said with pride.
Fairgolf Invitational Tournament 2011
The Fairgolf Invitational Tournament 2011 held on September 10 at Woodville Golf Course was taken by Roly Reyes as overall champion with his score of net 63 using his handicap of 18 with Fairgolf. He outpaced the rest of more than 60 participants and received $300 for his fantastic efforts.
Division winners were BJ Villa for Div A and Jimmy Morales for Div B. Both of these winners received $150 cash as their prize. Division first runners up were James Fatu for Div A and Carlos Vallejo for Div B who also received $100 each as their prize. Division second runners up were Oscar Clemente for Div A and Rudy Neri for Div B. They received $50 each as their prize.
Novelty and mystery hole winners were also awarded to Michael Salayog (3, 8 & 11), James Fatu (10 & 13), Jun Almario (6 & 17), Ogie Salayog (1), BJ Villa (2), Karl Fifita (4), Bong Sotto (5), Boyet Magnaye (7), Carlos Gabila (9), Jun Doculara (12), Jhune Angeles (14), Alvin Montano (15), Philip Punla (16) and Wil Badiola (18). These hole winners received $20 per hole as their prize.
8th AICL Education Cup
The next major tournament in the Filipino Australian golfing community in Sydney would be the 8th AICL Education Cup organized by Golf Par-E Social club with IDP Education Australia as the major sponsor. This will be held on Monday long week-end, Oct 3 at Lynwood Country Club starting at 8:00AM shot gun. Registration fee is $65 inclusive of green fee, snacks, lunch and lots of prizes/giveaways. Meanwhile, another major tournament would be the PAL Interclub golf championships being coordinated by Sydney Interclub Golf Organizing Committee (SICGOC) headed by Andy Porral. This will be held on October 30, 2011 at Wallacia Golf Club with over 100 golfers participating coming from Sydney Jokers, Fil-Oz, Golf ParE and Hampaslupa Social golf clubs. This tournament is now on it’s 12th year and being continuously sponsored by Philippine Airlines with naming rights.
